Instagram’s continued rise, how to customize the iOS 11 control center, and Google’s acquisition of HTC mobile. Check out our top tech reads from last week!

  1. Instagram now has 800 million monthly and 500 million daily active users. The app is (still) growing at a rapid pace, and has added 100 million new monthly active users in just a month since it last reported a new figure. Despite the social network’s huge user population, its growth isn’t slowing down, putting it on a path to potentially catch up to parent network Facebook’s user number down the road. (Techcrunch)
  2. You can use iOS 11 to make your Control Center your own. Control Center still features the same tools you’re used to, including flashlight, airplane mode, and AirPlay mirroring. But you can now add a whole slew of new shortcuts and features, and customize the layout to suit your style. (Mashable)
  3. The Bose headphones with Google Assistant are official now. Google and Bose announced a new version of the headphone maker’s great noise cancelling headphones, the QC 35s. The big new addition is Google Assistant — or rather, a dedicated button on the headphones that triggers the Google Assistant. (The Verge)
  4. Former Apple Engineers Working on New Eyes for Driverless Cars. The Silicon Valley start-up Aeva is developing new sensors that could significantly improve how autonomous vehicles see the road. (NYT Tech)
  5. Google Betting On Mobile Hardware Again. Google recently announced that it was acquiring part of HTC’s mobile business for $1.1 billion. This is the second time Google has made an acquisition in the handset space. While the first acquisition of Motorola was primarily for the patent portfolio, the HTC deal appears to be more for the hardware and design team than intellectual property. (Forbes)
